Another 'Indie' Needs Our Help!

04.16.09

A very sweet independent local bookstore & tea house is feeling the pressure of a struggling economy. Friends, if there’s a time to come together as a community to help – now is the time. Our local Mom & Pop places are having a tough time. I’m suffering, my parent’s business is suffering, all us “Indies” are suffering. We all need to help each other, and when one in our ranks reaches out, hands must take a hold of them and pull them to safety.

My hand is out but I’m not strong enough to do it alone – Can you Lend a Hand?

From an email from East-West Crossings:

"Dear Friends,

Like all retailers, we have been affected by the current economic downturn and by consumer fears. We recognize that fundamental shifts are occurring in our economy and our attitudes toward buying. In the end this may be a good thing for us all. But in the short run, we find ourselves being in a risky position for the coming year.

So we are writing to ask you for a different kind of support.
If you appreciate the efforts of East-West Crossings in our attempt to bring multicultural books, arts and music offerings, as well as a quiet place to sip tea and meet friends, this is the time to help us stay in business.

Often our customers say, "Please don't ever go away - the community needs you."

We are inviting all of you to become Members of East West Crossings. If you'd like to join, simply reply to this email saying, "I'd like to join" and we will email a membership form back to you. Or you can stop by or call (234-8810) to pick up an application. We will be happy to email, mail, or fax an application to you.

Annual member fees are $25 for regular members and $20 for students and senior citizens (60 and over).

Our membership application is now online. Just click on "Membership" at http://www.eastwestcrossings.com/ and use our secure ordering site to join instantly. Or reply to this newsletter saying "I want to join" and we'll e-mail an application to you.

As our spring offerings are rolled out, we will provide discounts to our Members. Membership benefits will include the following:

(1) 20% off of all new hardback books (including special orders),

(2) Featured books of the month will be discounted at 20% for the entire month

(3) Special Member prices for certain events and workshops.

(4) Members-only access to "Opening Days" of Special Sales, such as the one we are about to unveil for books, CD's and gift items hand selected from Indian and Tibetan crafts. This special offering sale of tea cozies, prayer malas, Kashmiri shawls, and hand embroidered pillow covers will begin on Wednesday, April 15th.

(5) Access to our expanded Members' newsletter that will contain book reviews and items of interest about forthcoming events.

Most of all becoming a member means that you are willing to provide us with sufficient support to continue offering a unique resource to the community during this difficult economic period.

You know -- and we believe -- that setting priorities on green and sustainable resources and health care for all is consistent with our value to the community. Tea is a green, wholly natural and renewable resource and provides well-proven health benefits. And all of our books, arts and gifts are provided with the intention of building peace and international understanding.

Thank you for all that you have given us in the past - we sincerely hope that we can count on you to partner with us now."

My prayers are with your continued success. I will certainly stop in next time I visit State College. I dont visit as often as I'd like, because I live in Maryland. Being of mid-life age, and blessed with stable employment, we always choose Indie over chains, and find the benefits well worth paying for.
